His journey began with a single violin—and grew into a lifetime of craftsmanship, kindness, and community.
About US
Bill Gailes (1956–2021), Our Founder
Bill Gailes founded Gailes' Violin Shop in 1976, working out of his parents' basement. A music performance major at the University of Maryland in 1974, Bill was already working as a freelance musician when he discovered his passion for violin making under the guidance of a local craftsman. After completing his first handmade violin—Opus 1 No. 1—in 1975, he devoted himself fully to the art of building, repairing, and restoring bowed string instruments. in the ensuing years, GVS has grown into a respected business, where all who walk through the door are treated with respect and dignity, whether they are professionals or new beginners.
Over the decades, Bill pursued lifelong learning, studying instrument restoration nearly every summer with master luthier Hans J. Nebel for over 30 years. He honed his skills further with experts like Arnold Bone (bow repair), Samuel Kolstein (bass work), and the revered Dario D’Attili. But Bill’s true legacy was never just in technique—it was in his character.

As remembered in a tribute by longtime customer and friend Eric Maring, Bill brought a rare steadiness, warmth, and attentiveness to every interaction. He made each customer, student, and family feel truly seen. Whether welcoming a wide-eyed young cellist or offering quiet encouragement to a seasoned player, he created a space where everyone felt they belonged. He listened without rushing, respected each person’s journey, and believed deeply in the value of music education.
For 46 years, Bill built more than a shop—he built a community rooted in kindness and trust. His presence is still felt in every note played on an instrument that passed through his hands. We continue to honor his memory by upholding the values he lived by: generosity, craftsmanship, and respect for all. He is deeply missed, and his legacy lives on in everything we do.
